Plugging in...to Waimakariri
It’s another brilliant day for getting the election vibe as we enter the outskirts of Rangiora to insert our mood probe into the heart of Waimakariri.
At 10am the temperature is rising as the Nissan Leaf glides past tall hedges, pylons, lifestyle blocks, flashy car yards and old geezers on their electric bikes at the south entrance to the town.
Gail Lydiard, from Woodend, is taking care of her daughter’s gift shop in the town centre and normally votes National.
John Key always got her vote, but she finds Judith Collins “nasty” and National currently unimpressive.
“I like Jacinda but I think she just needs to be stronger and I worry about the country's debt,” she says.
Poll: Do you think banning gang patches is reasonable?
With the government cracking down on gangs, it is now illegal for gang members to display their insignia in public places whether through clothing or their property.
This means arrests can be made if these patches are worn in places like restaurants, shops, on public transport or ferries, and on airplanes. Arrests were made recently at a funeral.
