Concerns for council diversity after Hurunui votes against childcare allowance
A North Canterbury councillor at the forefront of a campaign for childcare subsidies for elected officials says she is disappointed her fellow councillors chose to vote against the policy.
According to the minutes from the meeting, councillors agreed the district was a "mostly rural district with many hard working residents who continuously contribute to their communities through volunteering or performing acts of public service without remuneration or parental help".
Cellphone bills, internet use and mileage allowances are already covered by the Remuneration Authority.
Poll: Do you think NZ should ban social media for youth?
The Australian Prime Minister has expressed plans to ban social media use for children.
This would make it illegal for under 16-year-olds to have accounts on platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and X.
Social media platforms would be tasked with ensuring children have no access (under-age children and their parents wouldn’t be penalised for breaching the age limit)
.
