Water pollution posing risk to cultural traditions in North Canterbury

Nicole Mathewson Reporter from Northern Outlook

New limits for the level of nitrates allowed in North Canterbury waterways need to be brought in faster, a community advocate says.

Kaiapoi business owner John Cooke, who recently joined the Waimakariri Zone Committee as a Ngāi Tūāhuriri representative, said he worried not enough was being done to preserve mahinga kai and improve the quality of local waterways.

"I am from a traditional fishing family and gathering mahinga kai is really important for us," he said.

Poll: Do you think NZ should ban social media for youth?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

The Australian Prime Minister has expressed plans to ban social media use for children.

This would make it illegal for under 16-year-olds to have accounts on platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and X.
Social media platforms would be tasked with ensuring children have no access (under-age children and their parents wouldn’t be penalised for breaching the age limit)
.
Do you think NZ should follow suit? Vote in our poll and share your thoughts below.
