One of the last pieces in Kaiapoi's riverside revamp is now in place, with a huge floating pontoon lifted into position.
The 111-metre-long pontoon made of concrete with a polystyrene core was lifted onto the water in 11 separate pieces with a 90-tonne crane over two days last week.

Also on the weekend I read about Stuff’s project where they contacted every candidate in every council race to ask a series of questions about climate change. Stuff also asked them all for a short position statement on climate change issues. (Found at interactives.stuff.co.nz...)
I was disappointed to discover that some of the candidates in my district have not yet responded, or perhaps have no intention of responding, to the ten questions posed to them. We all have a range of views about climate change and possible council actions. I didn’t agree with some of the responses, including that of the candidate who answered ‘no’ to the first question: “The climate is warming as a direct consequence of human actions.”
But I commend that candidate for having the gumption to be honest to the voters.
To simplify my voting choices I’ve crossed out the names of all the candidates who did not respond to the survey.
The climate change issue is divisive and maybe the candidates who did not respond were worried that expressing a point of view may lose them some votes. Or perhaps they were too busy doing other things, such as putting up more signs asking for our votes. That’s not the type of person I want to be an elected representative of my community.
I would prefer to vote for that candidate who answered ‘no’, than to vote for someone who chooses to keep silent over an important issue.
Now is a great time to check fire alarm batteries and make sure emergency supplies are well stocked and up to date.

Canterbury drivers overestimate their ability and think other road users are the problem, new research shows.
A total of 1460 people from Kaikōura to Waitaki, including 497 from Christchurch, completed an online survey about their driving habits.
Findings showed 42 per cent rated their own driving ability as above average. The same group considered 73 per cent of other drivers to be only average drivers.

Philip Redmond received a Queen's Service Medal for services to the community at Government House last Friday.
The Investiture was conducted by the governor-general, Dame Patsy Reddy, and other recipients of awards included former Wellington mayor Kerry Prendergast and actor Robyn Malcolm.

The Investiture was conducted by the governor-general, Dame Patsy Reddy, and other recipients of awards included former Wellington mayor Kerry Prendergast and actor Robyn Malcolm.
The investiture was attended by Philip's family. Philip said it was the culmination of a lifetime's work serving the community and he was honoured to receive the award.
Dame Patsy was also aware of his local government work and congratulated him on his achievements.
Philip is a sitting Kaiapoi-Tuahiwi Community Board (KTCB) member, former lawyer and businessman, and is standing for election to the Waimakariri District Council and re-election to the KTCB.
