Tourism hotspot Hanmer Springs is calling for a fresh supply of workers over summer, with retail, tourism and hospitality venues all desperately seeking staff.

A housing shortage and transient workers have meant several operators have needed to reduce their hours, despite being fully booked for the upcoming season.

Alan McNabb owns and operates five venues in the village – Monteith’s Brewery, Finn’s Irish Pub, Roasted Bean Cafe, Fire and Ice Restaurant and the Alpine Village Inn.

He said despite last summer setting record visitor numbers in the tiny North Canterbury tourist town, they can’t find return workers.

“It’s horrific. I’ve lost 13 staff over the last three weeks and am about to lose another three chefs. We’ve cut opening hours so we can give the few staff we do have breaks.

“I need at least another 10 to 15 staff to get through this summer, but I have nowhere for them to stay either.” Read more here.

Hundreds of thousands of Kiwis who do not yet have both doses of the Covid-19 vaccine face a tightening of their freedoms on December 3, when the Government moves the entire country into the new “traffic-light” system.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced the date on Monday, saying Covid-19 was not going to be eradicated from New Zealand.

“The hard truth is that Delta is here and not going away,” Ardern said.

While Aucklanders will finally see an end to New Zealand’s longest lockdown, those in other parts of the country could face far more restrictions if they have not been fully-vaccinated.

A new aqua fun park not only aims to bring a summer of fun to Kaiapoi but will also teach children about ecology.

The WHōW charitable trust has been granted consent to operate a 160-metre inflatable fun park on Courtenay Lake.

Kaikanui Aqualand will open on Saturday and run until the end of March. It has consent to operate from October to March each year for the next three years.

The aqua park has been six years in the making and is a transitional project to build support for the trust’s other main project – the development of a whitewater, surf, and cable wake park next to the Kaiapoi River in the east regeneration area.

A single 50-minute session at the fun park will cost $30, but WHōW vice chairman Jason Mill said a youth price would soon be available, as well as early-bird specials.

He said children from low-decile schools across the area would be offered the chance to play at the park for free. They would also be given an ecology lesson at the same time, and would have the opportunity to plant trees around the lake.
