Labour Day in New Zealand History

The Team from Marlborough Museum

Discover the real story with Brendon and Philippa Burns, and friends. Labour Day commemorates the struggle for the eight-hour working day and New Zealand workers were among the first in the world to claim this right.

Calling all workers and those who support them

Come and meet Samuel Parnell (played by Brian MacNamara), the father of the eight-hour working day along with modern-day Marlborough workers toiling in our vineyards. Julie Neal from Thornhill and some RSE workers will be talking about current labour issues. This presentation celebrates Labour Day and the origins of the eight-hour working day whilst looking at current working conditions here in Marlborough.

Poll: Should the government levy industries that contribute to financial hardship?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

As reported in the Post, there’s a $30 million funding gap in financial mentoring. This has led to services closing and mentors stepping in unpaid just to keep helping people in need 🪙💰🪙

One proposed solution? Small levies on industries that profit from financial hardship — like banks, casinos, and similar companies.

So we want to hear what you think:
Should the government ask these industries to contribute?

Dehorners

Ron from Fairhall - Renwick - Woodbourne

SharpAs Tool Tips

Pictured is a set of dehorners brought in for sharpening. Like all cutting tools, a sharp edge is essential for them to work efficiently and cleanly.

Good to see that pain relief is now part of the process as well.

If you have tools, knives, kitchen utensils, or other items that need sharpening or repair, come and see me:
🔹 Redwood Market – Saturdays
🔹 Marlborough Farmers’ Market – Sundays
Or contact me directly on 027 444 5535.

Cheers,
Ron
