Right turns banned at busy Kumeū intersection
Kia ora neighbours. Motorists will no longer be able to turn right onto SH16 from Coatesville-Riverhead Hwy from May.
Waka Kotahi NZTA said the right turn ban is an interim solution to improve safety at the intersection while a roundabout is designed, consented and built.
There were 39 crashes at the intersection, including one serious crash and at least three fatal crashes, between 2010 and 2020, according to Waka Kotahi data.
Those wanting to turn right can instead detour down Old Railway Rd to use the roundabout at the intersection of SH16 and Old North Rd.
The local MP and local board chair were both critical of Waka Kotahi for failing to build the roundabout, which is still in its design phase.
