Iwi Te Roroa was alerted to the 10 metre whale by police about 7.30am on Tuesday. Sadly, the whale had already passed away by the time they reached it.
The Department of Conservation said it would work with the iwi to establish what would happen to the whale's body. That could involve flensing - to remove blubber from the carcus - or a burial.
Iwi Te Roroa told Stuff it intended to bury the whale at the next low tide.
