You’ll discover, a few of Darryl’s top secret cultivating tips that help him get the best yield from his crops, year on year and how you can too!

How to PREPARE Your Seed Potatoes

You should aim to have brought your preferred seed potatoes up to 6 weeks before planting... this is to allow them to begin to sprout (called chitting)

Remember…

Always use certified, virus free seed potatoes to ensure you get great results.

It's important not to plant out your Seed Potatoes until after the risk of frosts have ended (alternatively if you're super eager, the use of Frost cloth can do the trick)

Store your seed Potatoes in a nice dry area until they produce shoots between 2 – 4 cm long (storing in an egg container is our wee hack!)

How to PLANT Your Seed Potatoes

Planting in the Garden

1. Make long creases in the soil about 400mm apart

2. Place seed potatoes approximately 250mm apart in the creases

3. Cover the seed potatoes with soil

4. Continue mounding soil on your seed potatoes as shoots grow, until the shoots are approximately 300mm tall. (This protects them from wind, frost and prevents light reaching the potatoes and turning them green).

5. Once the shoots start to collapse the potatoes are ready to be dug up

6. Yum - harvest a great crop of homegrown potatoes

Planting in a Planter Bag (purchase online www.nzlifestylegroup.co.nz...)

1. Check there are drainage holes in the planter bag

2. Place seed potatoes in soil in the bottom of the large planter bag

3. As the sprouts grow, keep adding soil until it is up to the brim of the large planter bag
4. As you add soil we recommend you add some potato fertiliser too

5. Once the shoots start to collapse, they are ready to harvest
6. Tip the bag out and yum – harvest a great crop of nutrient rich potatoes

When to Plant, and Harvest Your Seed Potatoes?

Knowing when to plant high quality certified seed potatoes, is just as important as knowing when to harvest and it is based on where they fall into each of…

The 3 Main Categories

1. First Earlies

When to Plant? Early Spring

When to Harvest? Early Summer

2. Second Earlies

When to Plant? Early Spring

When to Harvest? Late Summer

3. Maincrop
When to Plant? Mid Spring

When to Harvest? Late Summer/Autumn

I (Darryl) say “Certified, NZ Grown Seed Potatoes... nothing beats them!”

What is Certification?

Our Certified Seed Potatoes come with the piece of mind of knowing you’ll yield a good quality crop.

They are first passed through a quality certification process that ensures your potatoes will be Pest and Disease Free, so you can be at ease and just enjoy the delicious tastes of your crop.

Without it, you run the risk of battling potential pests and diseases during the growth period and more often than not, are left with a lower yield than expected, or a crop which is completely wiped out.

Key takeaway: Always Buy Certified.

Why Order Pre-Season?

Ordering now eliminates the risk of missing out during peak season

Ordering your desired selection of seed potatoes now and having them in your possession up to 6 weeks prior to planting them allows them to begin the important process of sprouting (called chitting) which is a key factor in yielding a fantastic crop..

Remember, you don’t need to plant your seeds immediately upon receiving them, as storing them in a dark, dry place will retain their quality until spring planting and gives you first choice on premium quality spuds and deliciously good returns from your efforts.

Why Grow (and Eat) Your Own Potatoes?

There are many reasons why, but here are a few of the main benefits that potatoes have...

High in Fiber

Rich in Vitamin B

Eating their wholesome skin provides ~45% Vitamin C, and 18% of your daily Potassium requirements keeping you healthier.

Packed with more protein and Iron than any other vegetable

Growing your own is not only fun, it also ensures you know exactly what is going into your body, avoiding all the worrying “unknowns” that you may be eating when purchasing them elsewhere.

Why Leonie loves lawn bowls

Julia Wallace Retirement Village

For the uninitiated, lawn bowls may just look like a bunch of people throwing balls up and down a flat piece of grass.

But for Evelyn Page Retirement Village resident Leonie, it is a game of skill that has brought her 40 years of friendship, camaraderie and many fun-filled experiences and memories.

So much so, that she has dedicated most of the last 20-plus years to umpiring the game. It is her way of giving back, she says, and now she is lending those skills to the upcoming trans-Tasman inter-village Ryman Roll Up.
