So at this busy time of year I want to make sure you hear them from us. It’s a great privilege to run a local newspaper. We’re there for all the joys and the frustrations of this area. We get to see our communities at their best and, occasionally, when they’re struggling. But what is a highlight for us is getting to know you. So a big thank you to all our readers who support us. Thank you to all of you who contribute to this paper. We appreciate all the people who have told us their stories. And thank you to all our friends in businesses who support us with their advertising. 2017 has been a momentous year. But what has been on display too often in the news has been what divides us rather than what brings us together. So as we head off for Christmas, I hope we remember all the things that bind us together. Like friends and families and the great places we choose to live. Let’s be thankful for all the good things we have right here. Merry Christmas, happy holidays. And thank you.

Reporter Rotorua News

Sewing a new weed cordon for Lake Rotomā with a 60-year-old Singer sewing machine and individually attaching 700 floats and over 700m of chain with cable ties is just one of the many things local father and son duo, Geoff Ewert and son Van, do to protect Rotorua's lakes.

Last summer we embarked on an ambitious project to make a dent in the wasp population in the Nelson region. We fundraised and were able to lay 390km of bait lines in some of the region's most popular recreational areas, effectively making 10,000 hectares wasp free.

This summer we are delighted to announce we are expanding the programme to other parts of the country which are also affected by high wasp numbers. Vespex is laid in bait stations in late January and February when wasps change to a protein-based diet. It is of low toxicity and safe for bees. Results from last summer showed it has a 95%-99% success rate.

While a small amount of work is Government funded, we're going to raise more funds to get as many areas baited as possible, and we need your help. Go to our Popshop page to contribute to a wasp-free region

So join us in the battle. The more we raise the more areas we can cover.

We at Rotorua U3A invite you to join us at our next community forum on Wednesday 21st February 2018 when our guest speaker will be Gilliam Eadie of the Memory Foundation, based in Auckland.
She asks: “Are you looking after your memory?”
She addresses issues like losing our glasses and car keys; forgetting names, appointments; whether we’ve taken our meds and even why we’ve come into a room.
Memory Foundation co-founder and managing director, Gillian Eadie will be speaking about strategies for building new brain connections as a buffer against memory loss in later life.
These strategies have been developed by Gillian’s co-founder and sister, Dr Allison Lamont in conjunction with her Memory Clinic. Her programmes are based on her internationally acclaimed research into age-related memory loss.
An entertaining speaker, Gillian has addressed large audiences at a range of U3A, Probus, Zonta, Inner Wheel, corporate groups and other organisations.
Browse memory.foundation... or go to www.memoryclinic.co.nz... for more.
Today sees exciting new discoveries in the field of memory being made by the Memory Foundation. Come to our meeting and find out how you can benefit. Visitors warmly welcome with gold coin entry.
Mark this date in your 2018 calendar before you forget!
