Sam Alert
Police and banks are seeing an increase in overseas based scamming activity across the Bay of Plenty. The scam involves offenders ringing a victim and then convincing the victim that it is the victims bank calling regarding issues with an account. Through a web of lies the scammers convince the victim to allow the scammers to remotely access their computer and therefore gain access to the victims online banking. The scammers have also convincingly requested that the victim turn off their cell phone preventing the banks from contacting the victim if any unusual banking activity is detected.
These scammers are primarily targeting the elderly and vulnerable. They are getting away with thousands of dollars at a time which is often not able to be recovered!!
