North Canterbury residents boiling over water bottling 'opportunity'

Jake Kenny Reporter from Community News

A drought-stricken region where the tap water “tastes vile” could become home to an export water bottling business to the outrage of neighbours.

PGG Wrightson Real Estate has listed for sale Omihi Creek, a 116-hectare property in Hurunui, pushing its water bottling potential.

“[It] affords astute purchasers the option to diversify and to spread their income streams across a range of ventures,’’ the advertisement reads. “Take advantage of the water bottling opportunity on offer.’’

The Omihi Creek consent allows for 524,667cum of water to be taken each year – the equivalent of 210 Olympic swimming pools, or 525 million litre bottles of water.

The water can be used for irrigation and commercial water bottling. The property was initially given consent to take water in 2006, although no water has been bottled to date and has since been run as a blackcurrant venture.
