Golden straw nets $2000 prize for Oxford farming couple

Nicole Mathewson Reporter from Northern Outlook

Not quite like meeting Willie Wonka, but for Oxford dairy farmers Mike and Nicola Smith it was a moment to celebrate when they found a golden straw in their Artificial Insemination bank from CRV Ambreed and won $2000.

CRV inserted five golden straws into five AI banks - three in the North Island and two in the South Island - as distribution of semen straws started ahead of spring mating.

The promotion was part of the company's golden anniversary celebrations, recognising its 50th year.

Mike says they will put the money towards a family trip to Fiji to celebrate the end of a busy calving and mating season. The Smiths milk 1000 cows on 260 hectares at Oxford.
