Water pollution posing risk to cultural traditions in North Canterbury
New limits for the level of nitrates allowed in North Canterbury waterways need to be brought in faster, a community advocate says.
Kaiapoi business owner John Cooke, who recently joined the Waimakariri Zone Committee as a Ngāi Tūāhuriri representative, said he worried not enough was being done to preserve mahinga kai and improve the quality of local waterways.
"I am from a traditional fishing family and gathering mahinga kai is really important for us," he said.
