St John's Health Shuttle

Karyn from Kaiapoi

Hi everyone
I just want to send out a shout out to the folk who organise and run the St John's Health Shuttle in North Canterbury. I'm in my forties and due to a heart condition have been unable to drive for three months. The Health shuttle has been a wonderful service with great volunteers I have been able to fall back on when friends have been unavailable to get me to medical appointments. They go above and beyond with door to door service (so no parking hassles) one way or both directions as needed, from Amberley south to Christchurch and everywhere in between. I have used them to get to radiology appointments as well as hospital appointments and they will take people to local appointments too; they also do post-hospital stay pick-ups. I have observed volunteers actually take passengers into their appointments in wheelchairs (as appropriate) to ensure safe handover to medical staff and to ensure the best care for passengers. In return they just ask for a donation to contribute towards petrol but this does not need to be paid on the day of use if you are financially challenged or using them frequently. You book by 2pm the previous day needed through North Canterbury Citizen's Advice Bureau but would recommend you book earlier as there are limited seats and they only run if they have bookings. Depending on passengers' appointments there may be waiting time but the one time this happened to me meant having a coffee at South City and getting some shopping done while there, so no great hardship. It would be great to think the word of this service could be spread so please share this post with friends and family.

Poll: Should the government levy industries that contribute to financial hardship?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

As reported in the Post, there’s a $30 million funding gap in financial mentoring. This has led to services closing and mentors stepping in unpaid just to keep helping people in need 🪙💰🪙

One proposed solution? Small levies on industries that profit from financial hardship — like banks, casinos, and similar companies.

So we want to hear what you think:
Should the government ask these industries to contribute?
