Overnight snow closed the Lewis Pass, which connects North Canterbury to the West Coast, and MetService is warning snow could fall to 500 metres in Southland and Otago.

Early Monday, the NZ Transport Agency said State Highway 94 southeast of Milford Sound remained closed due to a rising avalanche hazard.

Chains were also essential early Monday on Arthur's Pass, which was closed to towing vehicles, NZTA said.
