The return of land
While pleased that Ngati Toa Rangatira have had the land at Whitireia returned, I am appalled that they had to buy it back. The old sad joke comes to mind that the missionaries arrived and the Maori had the land and the missionaries had the Bible; the missionaries said, let us pray and when the Maori opened their eyes, they had the Bible and the missionaries had the land. Something that appears to have happened all over our country.
If anyone should have been paying the just under five million dollars for the little bit of land, it should have been the Anglican Church before they returned the land to Ngati Toa Rangatira, while apologizing for never building the promised school.
Just one other point, Radio NZ should be ashamed of charging such a huge amount for the land. I can only hope that the amount RNZ will be paying to lease the land under the masts, will be a reflection of the purchase price.
