The autumn season of exhibitions has opened at Pātaka Art + Museum, with one showing how history can be held in the threads of blankets.

Two other exhibitions signal the first solo exhibition for two artists working in different media.

Featuring work by Jeanine Clarkin, Noa Blanket Co and Mataaho Collective, Paraikete Threads demonstrates how blankets hold many meanings in indigenous cultures.

The exhibition also looks at how contemporary Māori artists are working with the stories, histories and knowledge systems embedded in the blanket.

From sustainable and upcycled fashion designs, luxury blankets and repurposing mink blankets as space for wānanga, Paraikete Threads considers how artists respond to the many threads of blanket history in te ao Māori and the new meanings produced through contemporary practice.

Also opening recently is Ahilapalapa Rands: Across the Sea, which explores the connections with Hawai’i across the expanse of the ocean.

All exhibitions are showing until 2 June.

It is an attempt to explore the facts, feelings and impressions of people who were witnesses to this history-defining event in a contemporary way and to highlight the Easter message.

The team mounting this production are all locals: Averil Bennett of Titahi Bay is the script writer, assisted by musicians Felicia Edgecombe and Rosemary Russell and Ken Edgecombe in production. It is based on Biblical accounts of the events, also Gordon Jaquiery’s recent publication: Eyewitness, Stories of Advent and Easter. Titahi Bay Community Church and Trinity Baptist are presenting the event, with participation from friends in other churches. It is on for three nights: Friday 22nd March, Saturday 23rd, and Sunday 24th at 7.30 pm at Titahi Bay Community Church 25 Mana Avenue. Supper follows. Entry is by Koha.

Kia ora Porirua,

Our crews have responded to a rupture in a wastewater pipe in the gully below Tasman Close. This rupture has caused untreated wastewater to enter the Kenepuru Stream in Bothamley Park, which flows into Porirua Stream at Mepham Place.
We are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

Bothamley Park is closed to the public due to the ongoing wastewater renewal project, and warning signs are being posted along potential affected areas. We advise people to avoid entering the Kenepuru Stream and Porirua Stream until water testing comes back clear and a full repair has been completed. We will be regularly sampling the Kenepuru Stream at Mepham Place and at the outlet of the Porirua Stream.

The location of the rupture makes access difficult, and health and safety concerns make a repair complex. To move forward with the repair as quickly as possible, we have engaged with a geotechnical engineer to complete an assessment tomorrow morning.

We will keep this post updated with the latest information, and expect to provide a further update tomorrow morning.
