Porirua flooding update

Reporter Community News

Flooding Update from Porirua Mayor Anita Baker.
Fortunately, Plimmerton didn’t have any major issues overnight that we’re aware of.
There was some rain, but nowhere close to the extent we had on Sunday.
Council, Downer and Wellington Water had done lots of work in preparation for the rain, and Wellington Water had pumps at two locations on Karehana Stream which were effective.
There was, however, a landslip in Whitby, which has damaged two properties.
Residents were safely evacuated by Fire and Emergency from one, and the other was unoccupied. The properties were cordoned off and security put in place.
We’ll have crews out around the city this morning to assess whether there has been other damage across the city, and we’ll continue to work with affected residents.
On Monday we carried out around 100 needs assessments. 30 require non-urgent follow up and 9 need urgent follow up. We’re assisting one family with accommodation.
PCC Parks crews removed 20 truckloads of silt and mud yesterday. Today (Tuesday) we will be putting skips around affected areas to assist residents with clean-up Brendon from trash palace has said if anyone from Plimmerton or other parts of the city who have been flooded need anything like clothing or other items, then trash palace is happy to donate to them to help out.

Poll: Should the government levy industries that contribute to financial hardship?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

As reported in the Post, there’s a $30 million funding gap in financial mentoring. This has led to services closing and mentors stepping in unpaid just to keep helping people in need 🪙💰🪙

One proposed solution? Small levies on industries that profit from financial hardship — like banks, casinos, and similar companies.

So we want to hear what you think:
Should the government ask these industries to contribute?
