Hi neighbours,

Chicken is a popular dish for many Kiwi families. But are you happy to pay the extra cost for free-range or organic chicken? If so, why do you fork out extra for it? Although buying free-range chicken might be an ethical choice for many, it's not necessarily any healthier than other chicken.

As part of a new Stuff series, we look at why chicken is so cheap to buy nowadays, what happens inside the barn, why chickens get so big and the use of antibiotics in chicken feed. To learn more about what happens to your chicken before you put it in your shopping trolley, click the links above.

We're interested in looking at whether or not people are letting the price increase affect the way they use their car. We're hoping to hear if anyone has changed their habits and what they did to ease off the gas. Maybe people are cycling to work or maybe they're walking kids to school.
Please let us know. Share your experience.
And just remember to add an NFP to your comment if you'd rather it wasn't used in a news article.

We raise around $30,000 annually which is distributed to local causes first, but also regional, national and international causes through our affiliation with over 1.4 million Lion members worldwide. This market operates every Saturday Morning of the year except when Christmas day and New Years day fall on a Saturday, on our site on Main Rd near Outlet City.

This week we will also have a stall at Spring-into-Tawa - this is in addition to our normal market.

Our fruit-and-veg vendor is back with their range of fresh vegetables and fruit, much of which comes from their garden in Levin.

We will have Lions real-fruit Christmas Cakes for sale - normally $20.00 but reduced to $18.00. This is a 1.2kg un-iced cake sold in a christmas-themed box specially designed to facilitate the freshness a good (optional) Brandy deserves.

We sell free-range eggs and honey. The eggs come from a local co-operative distributor in packs of 6 (not 4), 12 (not 10), 18 and 24 and trays of 30 (not 20). The more you buy the less you pay per egg. The honey we sell comes from Helens Honey in the Wairarapa with creamed Meadow (light like clover) and Bush (stronger flavour). This week we also have Waireka (Manawatu) Honey Dew (liquid) honey available for tasting and purchase at less than the factory-shop price.

We are looking for more stall-holders. We have a solid base of regular customers but there is room to diversify. While we value casual stallholders looking to sell from their car boot, we are most interested in businesses wishing to attend each week with additional products to sell. We offer trial periods and our weekly fees are priced to attract new stallholders.

We can be contacted at tawamarket@lionsclubs.org.nz. We value customer feedback and any suggestions to make the market better.

Tawa Lions gratefully acknowledges the generosity of Outlet City in allowing us to use their site.

Some of Wellington's bus drivers will strike from tomorrow, but exactly how many are set to down tools remains unclear. The routes which will be affected are operated by Tranzurban, which has been unable to reach a collective agreement with the Tramways Union.

How can I check?

- Public transport provider Metlink is also unsure how the strike will play out, and is urging commuters to check their bus route before they travel. They can do this on the Metlink app or website, which the organisation says will be kept as up-to-date as possible throughout the strike. Alternatively call the Metlink team on 0800 801 700.

- The only Wellington City routes operated by Tranzurban are numbers 1, 7, 17, 19, 23, 24, 25, 26, and 29. The rest of Wellington City routes are operated by NZ Bus, whose drivers will not strike despite a deal not being reached there either. Full list of affected lines here.

While the strike is set down to end on November 30, union secretary Kevin O'Sullivan says that was an arbitrary date chosen only because strike notices legally required an end date.
