Poll: Should NZ schools have gender-neutral uniforms?

Sarah Reporter from Stuff

A new law in Wales says schools are required to have gender-neutral uniforms.

This means that while uniforms can include both skirts and pants, schools can't label these as "girls" or "boys" items.

Should NZ follow suit?

Memories of the Moon landing

Jennifer Eder Reporter from Marlborough Express

Residents at Redwood Care on Cleghorn St remember being "awestruck" and "glued to the screen" watching grainy black and white footage of Apollo 11 land on the moon on July 20, 1969. Did you watch the broadcast, and whose TV was it on?

Wendy Bramwell saw a white dolphin on July 13, 1968 -
"We were on the West side of Mana Island going to Picton when we were accompanied by a pod of dolphins, the leader was definitely this beautiful white one, they were so friendly and comforting, cavorting and splashing us as we motored through the water, they were so much fun. The yacht, the Hope, was a sloop owned by Alec Relling, it had been damaged in the Wahine Storm so we were taking it across the straits to Picton to be repaired . It had a big hole patched up in its side."

A sea dog with 50 years experience under canvas will captain a historic vessel during national Tuia 250 commemorations.

Australian man John Dikkenberg will captain the HM Bark Endeavour, a replica of Captain Cook's ship from the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney, during its three-month trip to New Zealand later this year.

The ship is part of a flotilla which will take part in national commemorations at four of Cook's landing places in New Zealand - Gisborne, Meretoto/Ship Cove, the Bay of Islands, and the Coromandel Peninsula.

John visited Marlborough on Monday with other seafarers to scope out areas where the flotilla would berth.

John said he is "excited to celebrate a thousand years of maritime history."

Council staff and parking wardens have been out on the streets helping people adjust to the new Pay by Plate meters.

While many have got the hang of it, some think that because there isn’t a meter at every parking space, they don’t have to pay. It’s important to remember the Pay by Plate meters are shared meters - this means there’s one meter for every seven parking spaces.

So now, once you’ve parked you simply walk in the direction you’re heading, and when you come to a Pay by Plate meter you pay for your parking – it’s easy.

She lacked self-confidence. ‘‘I had a negative mind set in which I had beliefs that I would never be successful at anything, with a very low self-esteem. ‘‘I made excuses because I had no motivation and little confidence and I let life pass me by even if it was a wonderful opportunity because I was so afraid of the unknown.’’

Not anymore! Prasad, 18, and the youngest in a family of five, is now working as a caregiver while studying a foundation course at NZMA for occupational therapy and has realised she ‘‘could do anything’’. She is the first in her family to go to university. The South Auckland teen has found her potential with the help of our Foundation that aims to transform young Kiwi lives.
