The Poppy Flight comes to Thames Museum
On Friday 26th March the first leg of the Poppy Flight fundraising relay is coming to Thames Museum. A small aircraft, a Harvard, will fly from Ardmore aerodrome to Thames airfield, carrying the base of two knitted artworks – an ANZAC poppy and a STARSHIP Foundation Star. Join us from 10.15am when more knitted poppies and stars will be added to the artworks and others will be for sale. The Poppy Flight is raising funds for Thames RSA, The Starship Foundation and NZ Warbirds. You can make a general donation which will be split 3 ways, or donate specifically to the charity of your choice. TVNZ will probably be present and as well the Museum has prepared a new display to honour the Thames people who fought in WWI and WWII. A museum member has lent a poster about the animals that made their contribution to the war efforts: even the humble glow worm played an important role.
Please tell your friends and family and come along to this event: if you have time to knit a simple ribbed poppy, the pattern is attached.
At midday the artworks will return to Thames Airfield and be flown to the afternoon event in Whitianga – the next stop in the Flight’s journey around NZ before returning to Auckland for ANZAC Day. However, fundraising for the three charities will continue at Thames Museum until 22nd April.
Poll: Do you think banning gang patches is reasonable?
With the government cracking down on gangs, it is now illegal for gang members to display their insignia in public places whether through clothing or their property.
This means arrests can be made if these patches are worn in places like restaurants, shops, on public transport or ferries, and on airplanes. Arrests were made recently at a funeral.
