Anatomy of Jan 5 Storm Surge
The Waikato Regional Council have produced draft report on the Jan 5 Storm surge. The storm surge was the highest recorded at Thames (Tararu ) since 1990, was a one-in-200 year event at Tararu, compared to previous events between 1999 and 2014 was 0.43m higher than the next highest event at Thames, and was 0.8 m above the predicted king tide. As reported in the Post, there’s a $30 million funding gap in financial mentoring. This has led to services closing and mentors stepping in unpaid just to keep helping people in need 🪙💰🪙
One proposed solution? Small levies on industries that profit from financial hardship — like banks, casinos, and similar companies.
