We know it’s important to get outdoors and stay active, luckily Tauranga has over 20km of coastline for people to exercise. We also have a range of walking and cycleways as well as parks and trails. But please remember to stick to places that are walking distance from your home, as driving is restricted to essential services only.

Auckland microbiologist Siouxsie Wiles says "Stay In Your Bubble"

So, what makes a bubble?
thespinoff.co.nz...

For the vast majority of us, it will just be the people we are living with. For people with shared custody of children, the bubble will cover the houses the children move between. If a blended family covers three or more households, that ends up being a pretty big bubble, so please think about whether it is best for some of the children not to move between their families. This will be difficult, but the aim is to keep the bubbles small and stop the spread of the virus.

If older relatives are able to safely live on their own, then they should stay as their own bubble. If you live alone, and you have a close friend who lives alone, then the two of you can form a bubble and move between your two homes. If you have flatmates and your partner has flatmates, you can’t form a bubble unless one of you moves in with the other.

Stay at home
I’ve been getting lots of questions about what we can and can’t do while we are at level four. Today the prime minister was really clear on this. Her advice: Act like you have Covid-19. Minimize the time you spend outside your home. That means no going for a leisurely drive or driving to the beach. What if you had an accident or your car broke down? There won’t be a coastguard to get us out of a pickle, so no boating or surfing.

You can go for a walk or a bike ride around your neighbourhood to get some exercise. You can go out to get essentials like food. But stay away from other people. No stopping to chat – even if you are two metres away from each other. Just give a wave and keep moving. Because the virus can live on surfaces for up to three days, don’t take your kids to the playground. Stay at home.

Remember, while we are physically distancing ourselves from everyone outside our bubble for the next few weeks, it’s important we stay socially connected. So be sure to schedule some online coffee mornings or dinner parties.

For the next few weeks, our essential workers will have to be outside their bubbles keeping things going so we can stay in ours. That means during this lockdown we have a one really important job to do. And that is to save lives. And we do that by making sure we don’t burst any bubbles.

That is the message from Tauranga Mayor Tenby Powell, as our city along with the rest of the country prepares to self-isolate to fight the spread of COVID-19.

Our focus is on the public’s long-term welfare and the city’s key infrastructure. Tonight at 11.59pm the nation will move to alert level 4. We will also be moving our focus and workforce to supplying the essential services our communities rely on.

To find out how our services, facilities, venues and events will be impacted by COVID-19 visit our website:

Dear concerned citizen,

We must now all stay home. Because that’s how we’ll stop the virus.

Level 4 measures will likely be in place for a number of weeks.

Don’t worry. During that time you will still be able to access all the essentials you need, including medicine, food, and other home supplies.

ALL THE TIME, NO EXCEPTIONS
It’s incredibly important that we all follow the Level 4 plan, all the time. No exceptions. Because doing so will save lives.

A CHALLENGE FOR EVERYONE
We realise these are big changes. But these are challenging times.
If we don't all stay home, the whole country will need Level 4 restrictions for longer.

SUPPORT OUR EMERGENCY SERVICE PEOPLE
We owe it to the essential services. Our nurses, doctors and everyone else on the frontline. They’re working tirelessly to save lives. We should all do everything in our power to help them do this.
Thank you to each and every person, for doing their bit.

While you’re staying at home:

STAY CONNECTED
• Don’t let physical distance stop you staying connected. Keep in touch with people using video calls, phone calls, chat and texting.
• If you know people who are living alone, vulnerable, or separated from their loved ones, regularly check-in with them.

STAY WELL
• Continue to practice good hygiene – wash your hands with soap. Then dry.
• Cough or sneeze into your elbow.
• Regularly clean surfaces in your home with disinfectant.
• Keep up regular physical exercise, and get some fresh air when possible. It’s good so long as this is solitary, or only with those you live with.

REACH OUT
If you need advice, support or help, try reaching out to friends, family, whānau or workmates.

WE'RE UPDATING INFORMATION CONSTANTLY

And remember: what you do now, will help protect all of us.
