Poll: Taking on your town's te reo name

Maxine Jacobs Reporter from Manawatū Standard

Mōrena kiritata,

A push to use Levin’s Māori name Taitoko has stalled and the councillor who backed the move says she’s surprised at the negative reaction to the idea.

In 2018 Horowhenua named its draft town centre strategy “Transforming Taitoko” and councillor Victoria Kaye-Simmons said it would also be nice to acknowledge the town's traditional name.

It has not featured since and Kaye-Simmons a faced backlash after speaking out.

What's the traditional Māori name for your town, and would you support its use?

Calling all Manawatu Artists!

Natasha from Ashhurst - Pohangina

Did you know that you can still be involved in the Manawatu Art Expo?

All artist bays are now sold out but there is still an opportunity to display and sell your work at the Manawatu Art Expo which runs 16 - 18 July at the Palmerston North Convention Centre.

You can still apply to submit 1 - 5 pieces of work (up to 1m each piece) which will be displayed for sale on your behalf. It's a great opportunity if you don't have a large body of work to exhibit, or if you just want to dip your toe in the water in terms of showing your work.

The registration fee is $35 and then a handling fee of $6 per artwork. A commission of 30% is charged on all sold work.

Registration closes on the 31st of May.

Application for Registration: manawatuartexpo.files.wordpress.com...

Registration Information: manawatuartexpo.files.wordpress.com...
