Sick & tired of single use plastics in supermarkets

I'm sick and tired of this pathetic excuse of environmental care that we have with single use plastics.

Shame on the government for "ticking the box" thinking they made any change when they banned single use carry plastic bags, and straws. This changes nothing!

Every time we go shopping I feel bad! Here's an example of a fraction of what I see.

* Spinach/herbs - in single use plastic

* Cucumber - individually wrapped in single use plastic (WHY??)

* Yakult - the sweet ones are in plastic bottles, but the sugar free's plastic bottles are each wrapped in single use plastic (again, why?!)

* Juices in plastic bottles with single-use plastic tightly wrapped around the bottles. Some don't have an easy way to remove it (how many of us do anyway?).

* Toast - wrapped in single use plastic.

* Cereal - cardboard box with single use plastic inside

* Oat cookies - cardboard box of 20 cookies, with each 4 cookies wrapped in single use plastic

* Capsicums - 4 wrapped in single use plastic

* Fruits - rolls and rolls of single use plastic you can use, one for each type of fruit you get

* Tomatoes - in a cardboard plate, wrapped in single use plastic

* Rice - 1kg in single use plastic

* Indome Noodles - each noodle wrapped in single use plastic, with plastic saches inside, and all ~5 wrapped in single use plastic.

* Meat - on plastic trays covered in single use plastic (do you really put meat/chicken covered plastic in your recycling, ending up with a nasty stench? Or do you end up throwing it in the bin?)

* Nuts - yep.. single use plastic bags to fill with nuts & weigh.

* Cheese - wrapped in single use plastics

The list sadly goes on, and on, and on...

Add to the above, that you can easily and very cheaply buy single use plastic bags from AliExpress, as well as straws, making the local ban completely useless.

For example,

www.aliexpress.com...

www.aliexpress.com...

Also add to that how difficult it is for us to recycle (if it even ends up recycled) single use plastics. There's nowhere in Warkworth that accepts said plastics. Closest is Whangaparaoa. You really think everyone of us north of the tunnel will be saving plastics and making the trip down?

We're not doing near enough here. The current 2022-2025 phase out feels like more of a campaign promise to win votes, than something that will actually make a difference.

And I haven't mentioned other plastics like the "recyclable" ones where you end up using once & throwing away anyway! Or the commercial use of plastics at shocking levels.

Spark have recently announced a price increase of $3 - $5 a month for new and existing broadband customers and other providers seem likely to follow suit.

Information collated by our research team has found that tens of thousands of Kiwis are still missing out on hundreds of dollars of savings each year on their broadband bill, because they are failing to shop around for cheaper broadband plans.

We estimate that over 500,000 households would be able to pay less for their broadband each month but many consumers are unaware of the fact that they could be making these savings and people often don’t know where to start when looking for a change in broadband plan or provider.

This is where NZ Compare can help. Our websites are simple to use and if you need more help, our friendly, Auckland based, customer support centre can advise on the most suitable broadband plan for your needs and help talk you through the switch. With unlimited fibre broadband plans available for less than $60 a month why would you pay more?

Find out more at NZ Compare or call the team on 0508 226672

CORRECTION: This post has been amended to clarify that the price of fibre and copper broadband internet services will increase, and that the increase is between $3 and $5 a month, not only $5 a month on fibre broadband plans as previously posted. (Amended at 10.31am, June 23, 2022)

Op Shop - Hibiscus Coast Presbyterian Church
Volunteers Urgently Needed
Volunteering at our Op Shop is more than just a good use of free time - it's fun.

Shop manager Val Dymock is on the lookout for new volunteers and says anyone with a few hours to spare might want to consider spending it volunteering at the shop.

"It's a place to come and have a laugh and make new friends," she says. "People are feeling isolated and don't necessarily want to come out, but our Op Shop are doing what we can to provide this place for people to still come to make friends and have a laugh."

The shop is invested in our local community and supports various community initiatives, schools, hospital Chaplains and needy families.
"Without volunteers, we can't open and can't make money to provide these services," says Val who runs the Op Shop.

The shop also provides a service for locals who might not be able to buy things new.

"We can kit you out, your house out, your kitchen out. There's everything here and the price range is starting at a dollar," says Val.

"And we cater for all demographics - antique dealers, people who want to buy stuff and put it on Trade Me to people who want to buy clothes from an op shop because they don't want to buy new for sustainability reasons. But without staff we can't provide all those things."

If you are interested, please call Val on: 021 133 6545 or call in at the Op Shop

We can show people round if they feel daunted at the prospect of something new - come in and have a look around the shop, meet a few people and we can go from there.
