Council Approves Huge Nelson Rates Increase
They said they were going to do it and now they have. Nelson City Council have approved the long term plan democratically agreeing to a 5.7% rates increase every year through the long term plan. Is 5.7% huge? Just once, perhaps not, but for those of us happy in our homes it comes to a whopping 74% increase over the 10 year plan. Occupations in our street include parent, fireman, teacher, office worker, hospitality staff, support worker, port worker, nurse, retirees, florist, factory worker and mechanic.
Nelson City Councillors may well afford such rises especially if they have other income streams to match their pay from the public purse but who in our street is likely to get a 5.7% pay increase per year let alone a 74% increase over the next ten?
It isn’t right and it isn’t fair. I cannot help but think the Mayor and Councillors should volunteer to take a matching 5.7% pay cut for each of the next ten years to show how ‘trivial’ such percentages are.
Poll: Should the government levy industries that contribute to financial hardship?
As reported in the Post, there’s a $30 million funding gap in financial mentoring. This has led to services closing and mentors stepping in unpaid just to keep helping people in need 🪙💰🪙
One proposed solution? Small levies on industries that profit from financial hardship — like banks, casinos, and similar companies.
So we want to hear what you think:
Should the government ask these industries to contribute?
-
59% Yes, supporting people is important!
-
26% No, individuals should take responsibility
-
15% ... It is complicated
