Warning - Look out for toxic algae
High levels of toxic algae have been found in some areas of the Maitai/Mahitahi River.
It is recommended that dogs and humans stay out of rivers and streams if the presence of toxic algae is suspected. Toxic algae can produce toxins that are harmful to humans, dogs, livestock and wildlife when eaten.
Signs will be put up indicating where the algae is, but if in doubt, stay out. Click here for advice on what to look for and what to do if algae is ingested.
