It seems that the family group that came … View moreIt saddens me that there are "persimmon pigs" in our area. There were hundreds of persimmons just starting to ripen. They are of the astringent variety they need to ripen on the trees to be best eating. Then suddenly they are all gone. It seems that the family group that came along with buckets last year and picked every one they could get have been at it again. How disappointing that they are unable to only take them when they are ripe and only enough for their own use leaving some for others. When the trees were planted it was so that people living in the area could pick a few items of fruit. Perhaps the council needs to put up signs to remind people of what should be common courtesy.

We could easily lose what we have gained. Our success, or failure, depends on the decisions that we’ll each make alone – but which in turn – will affect all of us.
Two weeks then a review
• On 11 May, we will review our progress and decide if we can safely continue to step down restrictions, or if more measures are required to protect us all.
• So the decisions we each make now, matter. Because every interaction we have is an opportunity for the virus to spread.
Keeping safe at Alert Level 3
• At Alert Level 3, the best way to keep those around you safe, is by keeping your bubble small. Interact with as few people as possible. Less people equals less risk. And continue to stay at home whenever you can.
• We should each be making the minimal number of trips. Be sure to stay local, and only make necessary trips.
• And importantly, work and learn from home if you can.
Let’s do this

KiwiRail is progressing plans to replace the current fleet of three ferries with two new, larger rail-enabled ferries from 2024.

According to google tracker we were the top region for cutting down our non-essential travel early on in lockdown, and I think the results speak for themselves. No new cases of Covid-19 in our region for the last two weeks, no clusters, no deaths.
My heartfelt thanks to the amazing essential workers, parents, grandparents, youth, and kids who followed the rules of Level 4 lockdown.

Covid-19 is sadly affecting people’s jobs all over the country where businesses have lost work.

Covid-19 is sadly affecting people’s jobs all over the country where businesses have lost work.
In Nelson Air NZ has a standalone business, Air NZ Regional Maintenance, that maintains the Turboprop aircraft of Air NZ. Covid-19 has NOT directly impacted the Nelson base and they still did have plenty of work to continue.
However Air NZ has proposed to take this work from the region of Nelson and relocate to its bigger Christchurch base, as that base has lost work. So Air NZ's Nelson base has not been directly affected like the majority of the country by Covid-19, Air NZ are choosing to take this work - that’s the difference.
This means approx 100 jobs will be lost in Nelson and is estimated to have at least a $10 million impact to Nelson and the “Top of the South” economy, and also impact the many smaller businesses that rely on the Nelson base’s flow-on work.
The Government says it wants to preserve jobs, but as a 52% owner of Air NZ, the Government itself is NZ’s largest single employer in NZ to lay off the most staff, estimated at 3500.
If you live in Nelson, own a business, or support a business in Nelson this will impact you in some negative way.
Nelson is the last Regional base Air NZ has left, all others have been closed. Air NZ and the Government (the majority shareholder in Air NZ) have a responsibility to all of NZ to promote and develop Regional NZ.
You can help! Please support us by signing this petition asking Air NZ and the Government to uphold their responsibilities to Regional NZ and reconsider this proposal.
Please hurry as we only have one week until the 30th April to make a difference, thanks for your support and please forward this petition to anyone else that would like to protect regional jobs
