Does a new library on the Maitai River rule out managed retreat?
Nelson City Council's backing for a plan to build a $44 million library in the riverside precinct, next door to the current library, could see council paying "hundreds of millions of dollars" to defend areas vulnerable to flooding across the city, climate campaigners fear. The council could face legal challenges if it put public infrastructure on a site at risk from sea level rise and river flooding, and chose not to protect people's assets across the rest of the city, they say. Should council hold off on the decision until community engagement on how to adapt to flood risks citywide is completed, and the Climate Change Adaptation Act is passed?
