Kia ora koutou

With the support of TDC & the Faulkner Bush Restoration Society, students at Wakefield School are planning to plant a pā harakeke at Faulkner’s Bush.

A pā harakeke is a collection of different cultivars of harakeke selected for their properties - either for raranga (weaving), or for their muka (fibre), for their suitability for whariki, kete or pui pui. We will be selecting cultivars from the Rene Orchiston Collection that is held by Manaaki Whenua (Landcare Research). Divisions will be taken from plants from the collection already established at Paine’s Ford in Takaka.

If you are a local weaver we would welcome your input regarding which varieties you would like to see planted from the collection. A catalogue of the collection is available online:

www.landcareresearch.co.nz...

Please email isobel.ford@wakefield.school.nz if you would like to be involved with this project, or to suggest cultivars to be included.
