As a proud Nelson local, Jackie is thrilled to be able to step into a role that allows her to be a part of her community. And drawing on 25 years of experience in Aged Care, it’s a profession that she truly has a passion for.
Jackie believes that great care means relaxed residents and families, and a team of staff that are engaged and happy. It’s that belief in the human side of care that drew Jackie to Green Gables.
“Our clinical care is excellent, but we believe in going beyond the standard medical model to cater to the holistic needs of our residents, so it’s all about the lifestyle - the beautiful environment, dining experience and adding all the extra touches. Each class is 3 hours long and covers nutrition, meal planning, understanding food labels, stretching the budget, portion control and more. Class size is limited to 12 and we are already half-way there. During the class there is a demo from tutor, then 'students' prepare a couple of recipes from the 50-page book that you can take away. We then sit down and enjoy lunch together.
It gets you out of the house, meet new people, learn something useful and bolster your confidence and your motivation.
Your tutor is a trained chef, high school technology teacher and is passionate about helping people to make better decisions around food.

From hosting a multicultural potluck or film screening to providing prevention information / resources in other languages, there are thousands of ways big and small to make our households, neighbourhoods, schools and businesses even more inclusive. It could even be as simple as learning from a neighbour how to say ‘hello’ in their first language or ensuring local footpaths are clear and accessible.
