What’s happening now?
On Thursday council will decide whether to support the developer’s application to the government’s Infrastructure Acceleration Fund for the Maitai /Maitahi /Mahitahi /Kaka Valley subdivision. The report will be presented to councillors and Save the Maitai will be speaking to this at the public forum.
Please come along to the Council Chamber to support the speakers and remind councillors that we don’t want urbanisation in the Maitai. Bring a big sign!!! You may like to stay longer at the meeting to hear Council’s consideration of the application.
The agenda was released Monday 9th August and can be read here: meetings.nelson.govt.nz... or here meetings.nelson.govt.nz.... The application is on page 123.
TAKE ACTION!!!

Before Thursday write to your councillors telling them what you think. You can reach them all by email at: councillors@ncc.govt.nz
Meet outside the council offices on Trafalgar St, by 9.15am on Thursday.

The Save the Maitai speaking time is 9.35 to 9.45 am. If there is not enough room inside the council chamber, they have arranged the overflow room and the foyer.

Battle for the Banded Rail has a planting day this Sunday 9am - 1pm on Rabbit Island’s South coast.

Please park at 98 Ken Beck Drive, on the right, just over the Rough Island to Rabbit Island bridge, then follow the orange cones around the coast. Please note, THE VENUE FOR THIS HAS CHANGED – was previously advertised as Hunter Brown Reserve.

Bring gardening gloves, sturdy shoes/boots, a narrow-bladed spade if you have one, and drinking water. Morning tea will be provided. All volunteers are welcome and there are jobs other than digging.

We’ll go ahead unless it’s raining hard or stormy. If you don’t get an email by 8:00 on Sunday morning, we’re already there setting up 😊.

THE FOLLOWING planting day is Sunday 22nd of August at Reservoir Creek, through the underpass from the Richmond Aquatic Centre.

We are meeting again this morning at 10.00 am and plan to get together monthly.

We can only work on public reserves and our own property.

If you would like to join us, or learn more about what we do, please contact me.

We have met with NCC Council Staff and now understand that the only way we will ever improve the situation is with our own efforts. The problem is too large and the costs would be too high to do this without volunteer labour. Council are ready to help with advice and information.

Nobody wants their rates to rise and so its not feasible to leave it to Council. After all, Council are us - we are in this together.

We would ask you, if you have these weeds on your property, would you be willing to remove them - or at least cut the vines out of the trees - not pull them - just leave them to die 'in situ' as this keeps spreading weed seeds to a minimum.

We weedbusters would love to see more of our friends and neighbours joining us in the effort to free our trees.
