• Privatising our health system is not a model we want in New Zealand. In the USA people are made bankrupt to pay for health procedures and healthcare is witheld if you don’t have the means to pay for it.
• Private health insurance premiums increase with age and are loaded for existing health conditions. e.g. pensioners and people with existing chronic health conditions unable to afford private health premiums.
• Private operators are in it to make a profit and they will cherry pick the most profitable cases.
• Private hospitals don’t train staff, they poach them leaving public hospitals struggling to staff their operations.
• Funding the public health system properly is the most sound economic return on tax payer money (15-20% of every dollar put into private health is syphoned off as profits and often offshored to rich corporates / investment companies)
• Private Health does not offer a better level of care. Should anything go horribly wrong in the private system you will be shipped back to the public system to mop up the mess.
• Our public health system has been chronically underfunded for years but moving to a private health model is NOT the answer.
