Are you outraged that the Avatar crew are here?

Jean from Tahunanui

I am outraged that the Minister for Economic Development has used a little-known loophole to allow the 56 movie crew for Avatar to enter New Zealand, while we are all patiently and quietly enduring lockdown to keep us all in New Zealand, safe. Why on earth are there 2 rules here? This is worse than Cummings breaking the lockdown rules in the UK- this is 56 people breaking the lockdown rules! .
And the crew have apparently flown in from LA, one of the current coronavirus hotspots in the US.
And... get this! The producer says, "We're feeling very comfortable coming to the safest place in the world". Well - it WAS the safest place...
Does anyone know of a petition about this please? I have emailed our Prime Minister at jacinda.ardern@parliament.govt.nz

Is dyslexia going 'unnoticed' in schools?

Katy Jones Reporter from The Nelson Mail

Do you think schools need to change the way they teach children to read? Some educators and parents are calling for a phonics based approach, after a surge in parents noticing problems with their children's reading, writing and spelling during lockdown.

Finally - Mapua's popular movie nights are back! On Sunday, June 14th the Packhouse Cinema will play the movie "Judy" in the Mapua Hall.

The story covers Judy Garland’s last gig in London. The film uses flashbacks in order for the audience to understand her character. What the story lacks in structure, it makes up with warmth. While this is a softer portrait, it still feels totally authentic.
The story hinges upon Garland trying to understand herself while making poor choice after poor choice. If you know anything about Judy Garland, you know where she is going... But what you may not know is --- how she arrived there! It is a deeply sentimental portrait of a brilliant mind and troubled heart.
What a heart-wrenching performance by Renee Zellweger. At times I had to remind myself that this wasn't Judy Garland. There have been some cynics saying that "Only a fool would try to play Garland." Dare, I say, Zellweger just made a fool out of you cynics.
No wonder she won the 2020 Golden Globe award and 2020 Academy Award for this performance.

As we are still under alert level 2 there will be some changes this time. Tickets have to be purchased in advance by sending an email to mapuahallsociety@gmail.com with your booking request. You will then receive payment instructions. Seats will be provided by the hall, so don't bring your own chairs. Also, due to the limited space in the BM room, numbers for visitors are limited to 50. Reservations have to close once the booking gets to that number.
Tickets are 12 dollars a person.
