Restaurant tipping

Barry from Stoke

Today my wife and i enjoyed a beautiful meal at the Mapua wharf but we were surprised when we went to pay by the plastic that the payment would not proceed until either a yellow or green button was activated which denoted to tip or not to tip.We being true blue kiwis elected not to tip as is our way (yellow). The payment then went through as normal.I presume that the green tip button automatically deducts a certain %. I Noticed a tip jar on the counter . Is this a new thing for the tourists and do we have to just suck it up and suffer the embarrassment under the nose of the waitress?
