1. If you’re not using it, switch it off: If you’re not using an appliance, such as a heated towel, dryer, or TV, switch it off at the wall so it doesn’t use power on standby.

2. Change your cooking habits: Eat fresh veges instead of cooking. Using the oven for an hour a night can add $20 to your monthly power bill.

3. Use curtains to trap heat in: Let the sun heat your home during the day then close your curtains to stop the warmth escaping in the evening.

4. If you’re away, turn the hot water cylinder off: You can save up to $36 on your power bill if you switch your hot water cylinder off while away on weekends.

5. Make the most out of your FREE Hour of Power: Utilise power deals like Electric Kiwi’s free Hour of Power, which gives you one off peak hour of free power a day. Use this hour to heat your home, turn on the dishwasher, or run the washing machine and dryer.

Take on Red Cross Journey and challenge yourself to walk in the shoes of a volunteer responding to a disaster or a former refugee family seeking safety. Follow their journey, hear their stories and make a difference for people in your community and around the world.

How does it work?

Red Cross Journey is all about walking in someone else’s shoes. Choose a journey to follow, clock 10,000 steps each day between 8 May and 8 June and get people to sponsor you.

Along the way, you’ll receive updates marking your milestones and sharing more about your chosen journey.
By taking part and fundraising, you’ll be helping Red Cross do good things across New Zealand and around the world.

Which journey will you take?

Choose to walk Disaster Welfare and Support Team volunteer Kath’s journey and cover 240km during the month – that’s about 10,000 steps a day – or get a team together and follow the Tamim family's route to a safer life, covering 1,000km.

Registrations are now open. Sign up and make every step count!

The hoops I have to jump through to get on "the list" is ridiculous to say the least, what steps are you taking to find a house, are you looking for a rental, where do you look, do you have family or friends you can stay with? I want my own home! The cost of market rent is disgusting & watching rental owners capitalise on the housing shortage is disgusting. I get people need to pay their mortgages but really! The other problem I have is our pets; they're part of our family & are coming with us no matter where we go. As of the 8th of May we won't have a place to live, I'm told to re-home our pets, look further afield, bunk in with someone else. I go to WINZ next week to see if they can find us a motel to stay in until I find something more permanent. The stress it's put me under is huge, I don't sleep, my son cry's every time he thinks about it (& he's a tough little nut!) I don't know what to pack, what to sell, or where to put it all in the interim. I do know that if it comes to the crunch & we have to live in our car with our pets I'll pull in next to Bob & co in the car park on Marine Parade & we'll be safe as house's excuse the pun. When we deliver the little bit of food we get donated on a Friday night to these guys the camaraderie is heartwarming, they take care of each other, nobody is out in the cold (another pun) in that car park. Not ideal living for anyone especially after they've worked all day but the best that's available to them & now it turns out to my family. Something must be done, build more homes, even a cap on rental costs would help. SOMETHING MUST BE DONE!
