Caravan destroyed as high winds rip across lower South Island
Police are reminding motorists to be careful when towing high-sided vehicles after a caravan was destroyed near Dunedin.
The incident happened on State Highway 1, just north of the Otago town of Waikouaiti, about 2.50pm on Wednesday.
Acting Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond said strong winds pushed the caravan off the road and overturned it, destroying it.
The wind was so strong police were unable to clear the debris from the road. The cleanup would be carried out when the wind died down, Bond said.
