In the lead up to the 2020 election, Stuff is keeping voters up to date with what’s happening in their electorate, through Neighbourly. Here’s what you need to know about the candidates in the running to be Te Tai Tonga's MP.
At the October 17 election, New Zealanders will have the opportunity to choose their regional spokesperson.
Through the Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) voting system, those enrolled can vote for the party they want as well as a local representative.
Why does my MP matter?
The person elected will be the voice for your region in Parliament. If you’re having trouble getting entitlements or dealing with Government departments, they can help. If your community needs funding for certain projects or activities, or there isn’t enough healthcare in the area, the elected MP can step in and help.

The couple will become the owners of the 134-year-old Chatto Creek Tavern on the Otago Central Rail Trail from November 3.
The tavern comes with two donkeys, a local population of 15 people, and retiring proprietor Lesley Middlemass.
“We had that many people want to come and buy it, but 99 per cent of them I hated. I wasn’t even that nice to them,” Middlemass said.

However, doors were closed for the first time in 140 years earlier this month when one of the proprietors became seriously ill and a sale deal failed.
“I thought ‘stuff it. Let’s get down there and getting it cranked up again’.”

Now she’s smashing records.
The 78-year-old grandmother of 10 surprised her friends at Cromwell’s NRG Health and Fitness by holding a plank – essentially holding a push-position at full stretch – for 21 minutes as part of a September challenge.
She held the gym’s longest plank title for a few days before 66-year-old friend and rival super gran Lesley Garrett “trounced” her by holding a plank for 40 minutes.
After someone topped their time by 45 seconds, they took on the challenge with competitive determination. Read the full story here.
