Protection for Scandinavians cemetery

Reporter Community News

One of the most important Pākehā heritage sites in Wairarapa is to get some protection.

Many of the hardy Danes, with names like Gunder Gundersen and Lars Larsen, who settled in the Wairarapa, are buried in a picturesque hill top burial ground in Mauriceville West – nestled in the hinterland halfway between Masterton and Eketāhuna.

The Lutheran Church that stood on the site was taken away a year ago and the future of the cemetery was in doubt, but Masterton District Council has agreed to looking after the cemetery.

Poll: Do you think banning gang patches is reasonable?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

With the government cracking down on gangs, it is now illegal for gang members to display their insignia in public places whether through clothing or their property.

This means arrests can be made if these patches are worn in places like restaurants, shops, on public transport or ferries, and on airplanes. Arrests were made recently at a funeral.

Do you think this ban is reasonable?
