A short-beaked common dolphin has been lurking alone on Big Manly beach since Wednesday evening.
Common dolphins are an abundant, protected species and prefer swimming a few kilometres from the shoreline. They are especially common in the Hauraki Gulf.
Marine mammal rescue organisation Project Jonah believed the male dolphin was unwell given its unusual swimming behaviours. It wasn't normal for dolphins to be separated from their pod.
"We'd like people to respect its space. If it approaches, stay in the shallows or get out of the water," general manager Daren Grover said.

Yesterday, one person tragically died in a serious crash on SH1 in the Dome Valley. The death has prompted renewed calls for the NZTA to move forward with Ara Tūhono - an extension of the northern motorway from Puhoi to Wellsford, which would provide an alternative route for the dangerous road. At least 30 people have died in accidents on the road since 2000 according to NZTA data, making it one of the North Island's deadliest roads. Construction isn't expected to start for another 10 years.
Do you travel through the Dome Valley a lot? Should this project be brought forward?
