The email directs the recipient to renew the funds through clicking a 'Renew Now' button at the bottom corner of the email. It then takes the individual to fake website that gets them to fill in personal details.
CERT NZ, the government authority responsible for cyber security said in a tweet, that anyone who receives this email should report it directly to Waka Kotahi (NZTA).
How to spot a phishing scam:
- NZTA will only send an email through if an individual has contacted them first.
- Email addresses will always end in @nzta.govt.nz, @enews.nzta.govt.nz or @reply.nzta.govt.nz.
- The email may be missing specific details that the NZTA will have on file: such as your plate number, the date your vehicle license is due and vehicle make and model.
- Hover over buttons and links to see if the pop-up will take you to a genuine government (.govt.nz) website
Neighbourly will update this message as further information comes to hand.

Campaigners against the newly approved Dome Valley landfill are “gutted” with the decision, and are vowing to take their fight to the Environment Court.
The controversial landfill, to be built on 60 hectares of land in the Dome Valley on State Highway 1 between Warkworth and Wellsford, was granted resource consent on Monday, despite the proposal attracting 958 submissions from people against the landfill.
Michelle Carmichael of Fight the Tip said she was “very much gutted” to learn the landfill had been given the go-ahead.
She said the group felt angry and let down at the process, given the proposal was approved despite the stiff opposition.
“You wonder what else you can possibly do to change the outcome.”
In a statement, manahautū (CEO) o Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Whātua Alan Riwaka said the iwi was “disappointed yet unsurprised” by the decision.
“Rest assured, the fight is not over and we will continue to advocate for the mana of our whānau, hapū and iwi in the protection of our whenua, waterways and Kaipara Harbour.”

CCO Eke Panuku is seeking the former owners of eight properties on Whangaparāoa Rd and one on Brightside Rd in Stanmore Bay.
The Rodney District Council purchased 23 properties under the Public Works Act between 1997 and 2000 so it could undertake a road widening project. However, the work never went ahead, so the council is obliged to re-offer the properties to the former owners before it can list them on the market.
Eke Panuku has managed to get in touch with some of the former owners, however it is asking the following people (or their successors) to get in touch by July 9: Rosemary Martha Meek, Mary Patricia Cavell, Kent Woodward La Rue & Janice Mary Barlow, Bernice Adelaide Evans, Noleen Alice Walker & Collin George Dyson & Allan Dyson, Lyall David Martin & Christine Martin, Norma Valerie Revell, Brendan Ronald Thickpenny, and Ronald Frederick Pilbrow & Verna Doreen Pilbrow.
If you were one of the people who the council acquired property from, I'd really like to hear from you too. Are you upset that the road works never went ahead after you were forced to give up your home? Please email me at caroline.williams@stuff.co.nz
