Scrap over donation of block of native land in Wainuiomata
A bid to protect a large tract of native bush near Wainuiomata with a fence has the landowners feeling frustrated.
David and Pauline Innes spent more than $140,000 on a 2.7 kilometre fence around their 38-hectare block in In Moores Valley Rd, which was completed just before lockdown. The fence is designed to keep out deer, goats and pigs.
The Wainuiomata block is in the final stages of being accepted into the protection of the Queen Elizabeth II National Trust.
The couple believed a verbal agreement with the Department of Conservation to construct part of the fence along a shared boundary had been reached. The couple’s son, Craig, said his parents felt blindsided by an accusation by the department that the fence was illegal after invoicing it $21,452 for its share in April.
In a letter dated August 13, DOC stated no agreement had been reached and the requisite consents from the Greater Wellington Regional and Hutt City councils had not been obtained.
Poll: Should the government levy industries that contribute to financial hardship?
As reported in the Post, there’s a $30 million funding gap in financial mentoring. This has led to services closing and mentors stepping in unpaid just to keep helping people in need 🪙💰🪙
One proposed solution? Small levies on industries that profit from financial hardship — like banks, casinos, and similar companies.
So we want to hear what you think:
Should the government ask these industries to contribute?
-
60.8% Yes, supporting people is important!
-
23.8% No, individuals should take responsibility
-
15.4% ... It is complicated
