The only mainland Royal Albatross breeding colony in the world can be found at Dunedin's Taiaroa Head. The Albatross are largest (and arguably the prettiest) seabird and is a taonga species to Māori.

Keen to see a fluffy royal albatross live? Head to the Royal Cam - a 24-hour live stream of an albatross nest.

Why the live feed? Well, the royal albatross are slow-breeding birds, and lay only one egg every two years.
Currently the chick in the feed is in its post-guard period, and is left alone. The parents are only returning with food every few days. This little chick will be hitting a milestone really soon - it will finally take their first flight in September! Keep an eye on our little celebrity here.

We hope this link brings a smile!

Kia ora everyone,
Really excited to let you all know I'm running for Greater Wellington Regional Council in Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai / Lower Hutt General Constituency.

We live in an amazing area, but there’s still loads that needs to be done to make things better for everyone.

Smart solutions for people & the environment have always been my passion.

One of my strengths is the ability to look at things differently… & that’s what we need!

We need approaches that deliver more benefits for lower cost, rather than just doing the same-old stuff over & over again.

I want to “Go Fast & Fix Things”.

So, if you want to know more about my ideas, please check out my Facebook page: TomMurphyforGreaterWellington

Your #1 vote would be most appreciated!

I believe we can do great things together.

Cheers,
Tom

Lower Hutt Rates

Since he has been in office, he has increased our rates by 70%. Initially there was a 40% increase because of increased house prices (I would argue that such a huge rise was not necessary), and since then there was the 17% last year and now a further 10%!! This is unconscionable, especially since it went across the struggle post covid and the economic difficulty in Wellington since many people were made redundant. The rates rises were not just for essential services either - millions were spent on the (unwanted) Petone parking meters (not essential) and the (unwanted) addition of water meters. The parking meters in Petone are a prime example of the City council not being interested in what their rate payers want! The hourly rate of $3 adds a lot to the cost of doing business in Petone. It would be a real shame if the greed of the Council leads to the destruction of Petone’s central business district! It would seem that the city Council is using us as an ATM to create ways of gouging us some more. They seem determined to bleed us dry and there seems to be no way of stopping them. As of next year they are going to charge us for water usage over and above our rates. This has got to stop. They are already taking almost half of my pension!
It would please me hugely if the new councillors we vote in show a concern for the wellbeing of their constituents. It would be lovely if they instituted a cap of 5% of total house value on the rates. Hopefully when the water meters kick in they will give us a rebate for the amount we would have paid for water services, so that the water metering does not add more to the already onerous amount we are paying them. Please make your vote count.

Restructure.
A scary word that can make people uneasy—and for good reason. According to The Post, more than a third of New Zealand’s public services have recently faced it.

But why is restructuring the go-to strategy for driving change?

In The Post’s article 'Reaching for change: Is our public service obsessed with restructuring?', doctoral candidate Annika Naschitzki from Victoria University is trying to understand repetitive restructuring.

New Zealand’s public service is often seen as risk-averse, slow-moving, and stuck. But interviewed staff indicate that they want change, that change is needed ... just not through restructuring.

Naschitzki doesn’t mince words: “We always have the same issues, but we keep trying to fix the same problem with the same hammer we've been using for decades.”

Are we leaning too heavily on structural change when real transformation might lie elsewhere? Perhaps through training, resourcing, tools, and practice, as Naschitzki suggests.

What do you think?
Is restructuring the right tool for meaningful change, or just a habit we can’t seem to break?
If you are wary of restructuring, how can we do better?
Tell us your thoughts in the comments!
