Something a bit different this week. Louise Thomas features regularly on Neighbourly but it appears she is not the only bird lover in the family.
"This beautiful drawing was a present from my lovely daughter, Caitlin, for my birthday. It's a portrait of a chap who frequents a large tree at the back of our neighbour's section - it borders our section at the back so he is often peering into our yard - this is the view we normally have of him. I've always valued the handcrafted gifts my children give me - looking at them in chronological order is like viewing the ascent of man. This one's going straight to the trophy room. Kererū/wood pigeon (Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae)."

Fantail/pīwakawaka at Days Bay

Louise from Woburn

An absolute ripper of a spring day in the Hutt on Saturday (unlike today). The duck pond at Days Bay was a hive of activity, the shags are nest building, the tui and kererū were gorging on the kōwhai in flower, and the two buff Orpington ducks that live there are super busy being policemen about where the other ducks are allowed to stop. We were thrilled to be buzzed by fantails and grey warblers while sitting on the mossy seat behind the pond. I think this is my favourite photo from the weekend, I’m loving the moss and lichen swaddled branches about at the moment. Fantail/pīwakawaka (Rhipidura fuliginosa).

The council is surveying residents about transport in Lower Hutt.
The survey follows on from a May 2021 survey that looked at peoples’ travel patterns.
People are asked about the degree to which aspects such as convenience, congestion, cost, parking, safety, and connectedness affect their decision to travel by private vehicle, public transport, or active modes such as walking or cycling.
Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry says the integrated transport strategy is a foundational piece of work for the city as population growth is making it harder to get around.
"This strategy will set out a vision and roadmap for the future of transport in Lower Hutt. We need to ensure that all parts of our transport network work together more effectively so that all users feel they can get around our city safely and efficiently."
What do you think the council should do to ease congestion?
