scam?

Hi guys, I was at Kmart in Petone when I was approached by a guy, saying he had run out of petrol and his child was in his car an he needed to get to Porirua to drop the child off. He didn't ask for money he said he needed petrol. His car tank was empty as I asked him to show me. Would this be a scam or was he just needing help for just petrol. Has anyone been in this situation?
