Wellington’s trolley buses won’t be around much longer – so take a last ride while you can.

Power to … View moreThat’s because the first step in dismantling Wellington’s trolley bus wires is set to start next week. A disused section in the city centre will be the first to go, beginning on 10 October. Removing the entire 82 kilometres of overhead wires will take 12 months, starting in November. Power to the trolleys will be switched off on 31 October.

Greater Wellington Regional Council says the trolleys have served the city well over the decades, but it’s time to look to new environmentally-friendly technology that can be used throughout the entire city and region. It says that next year the region will get a new fleet of low-emission diesels, as well as 10 electric double-deckers – and in the next few years there’ll also be another 22 electric double-deckers. Eventually the whole fleet will be electric, it says.

We’re excited to say that our team have been out counting in Kaitoke Regional Park had the highest count in 14 years with 186 kererū!

Kaitoke Regional Park includes some areas of high biodiversity and is one of GW’s Key Native Ecosystem sites (an area that has super special biodiversity – that we want to protect!). The Centre will be open from 12pm to 2pm weekdays and outside of those times people can text 027 474 4900 to make arrangements. We’ll make curtains especially for your windows and then drop them back to Timberlea for you to pick up.
