Parts of Hutt River off limits as toxic algae reaches red alert levels

(To help keep your dogs safe, please keep dogs either on lead or under control and away from Hutt River. This problem happens most summers and has killed dogs previously. But new dog owners may not be aware.)

From Dominion Post 14 January 2022
'Swimmers and dog owners are being asked to avoid areas of the Hutt River after high levels of toxic algae were found.

Toxic algae are a significant health risk as swallowing water containing the bacteria can cause serious illness, with pieces as small as a 50c coin enough to kill dogs.

Greater Wellington Regional Council’s Dr Evan Harrison said, monitoring data at the Hutt River at Silverstream Bridge, and Hutt River upstream of Silverstream bridge returned red alert levels of toxic algae.

“This means there are high levels of cyanobacteria present rendering the site unsuitable for swimming, and it should be avoided,” he said.'

The Hutt River gets a health check every week, monitoring for E.coli, toxic algae and nutrients

Amazingly enough a few days ago a falcon was hovering over Grant's Bush Reserve looking for prey and within 30 seconds of his/her departure, a hawk came swooping around.
I can recall a few years ago talk of Upper Hutt people never having spotted a falcon or a hawk in close proximity to the CBD. Grant's reserve is probably less than a minute away for a falcon to fly to the CBD.
Right now as this is written, a hawk is flying near the top of the trees in the forest of the reserve.
These majestic birds are terrorising the forest residents and one resident was screeching like crazy a few minutes ago.

We couldn’t do this without the help of many generous and kind people and organisations. One of these organisations is Project Village (Lagi Finau), who made up some amazing gift packs for lonely and isolated seniors in time for Christmas.

So, on the last working day in December, our CEO Stephen Opie and Social Connection Coordinator Kirsten Blyde spent the day delivering the gift packs all over town. “It was great to spread a little Christmas cheer a couple of days before Christmas. Some even said that this was probably the only gift they would receive,” Stephen said.

Thank you Project Village for caring for our Region’s seniors!

With the new year comes resolutions, and getting over fear of public speaking is a recurring goal for many.

In 2022, one of our club goals is to bring you more “meet our member” profiles so we can encourage others to fight their public speaking fears (or even take their public speaking to the next level) and kickstart their toastmasters journeys.

Chairing our next meeting on Sunday 16 Jan 2021 is our ever entertaining and engaging speaker George. George joined Sunday Afternoon Toastmaster in 2018 and continues to come along for ongoing personal development and the supportive evaluations.

Why not pop into 20 Sydney Street, Petone or online via zoom (yes - we’re hybrid) to find out more about Sunday Afternoon Toastmasters?

DM/PM or email us for more details.
