History of OLD Lower Hutt 1800-1850
Pre the first New Zealand Company ship Tory 1839 landing near Petone beach, Lower Hutt or THE Hutt as it was called, on the Heretaunga River was the beach and then dense bush.
Very few white people lived in the area, many were old Whalers.
Waiwhetu Pa was by the mouth of the Hutt and Waiwhetu Rivers and boats were able to navigate up them both.
A flock mill was on Waiwhetu stream about Fairfield area.
