We're very pleased to report that the final shipment of bins has arrived, the bins are being assembled and will be dispatched over the coming days. There is no need to contact us at this stage. Please be patient and we will get your bins to you.

This last shipment will be going to the 3000 households we notified and gave rubbish bags to and the other households who told us that they hadn't received their bins.

We will be providing information soon on when we will be picking up your old green crate for recycling, if you don't wish to keep it.

We have delivered bins to nearly 40,000 households. We are sorry to everyone who did not receive their bins as planned and thank you for your patience.

For everyone else getting used to the new service, please use the Too Good Waste web-app to confirm your next collection day and to see which bins to put out, as well as other useful tips: www.toogoodtowaste.co.nz... ♻️♻️♻️

Lower Hutt residential cost increases ....

The previous charge per singular vehicle was $15 and has now become $25 [a 66% rise], the other charges for various combinations/ vehicle types have also increased dramatically. A small trailer has gone from $35 to $50, all of which represent exorbitant increases, imposed by stealth it would seem as I saw no previous advice or notice of this intent. I wonder if others have noticed this and what their thoughts may be. With an expected increase in costs for the new rating period of 13 to 16% it makes one wonder, are we really getting value for our hard-earned $$.

A charm of goldfinches

Louise from Woburn

I took this just after 5.00pm on Sunday. It was almost dark so I had to overexpose the shot and it is grainy, but a charm of goldfinches (Carduelis carduelis) was on the road outside my house in Woburn. They kept lifting in a little cloud every time a car went by and then landing again. Wish … View moreI took this just after 5.00pm on Sunday. Take on the terracotta trend and sculpt a unique floral feature.

You will need:

- Modelling clay (air-drying or baking)
- Rolling pin

- Knife
- Straw
- Fine sandpaper
- Test pot brush
- Paint test pots (we like Resene Sakura & Resene Apple Blossom)
- Resene FX Paint Effects Medium
- Small sponge
- Cord to hang

Step one: Start by rolling out your clay about 7mm thick (A). It’s important to work on a clean, non-stick surface.
Step two: Use a knife to cut a rectangle as long as you want the main shape to be, then cut a square roughly twice the width of the rectangle and two-thirds the height (B). No matter what shape you’re making, the top piece must be wider to form a dome or pocket. The backing piece always needs to be taller and have enough height to support your flora and allow for a hole.

Step three: If using air-drying clay, dip your fingers in water and wet the edges of the clay slightly – baking clay does not require any water to seal together. Take the smaller, wider square piece and make an arc over the backing piece, bringing the sides together (C). Press the sides down so the clay bonds together, then do the same along the bottom (D), making sure you still have a curved opening at the top.

About 3000 households won’t have their new bins in time for the start of Lower Hutt’s revamped waste and recycling service.
The Hutt City Council has blamed Covid-19 related shipping delays on the hold-up, with the last lot of bins not scheduled to arrive from Australia – where they were manufactured – until after the July 1 start date.
Council chief executive Jo Miller said the delay occurred despite efforts to have the bins brought over earlier.
Interim arrangements have been made for households that will be without the bins when the new service starts. The green recycling crates currently in use would continue to be emptied.

A proposal to build 30,000 affordable houses, on land between Porirua and Lower Hutt, has little support amongst local body politicians.
Lower Hutt real estate agent John Ross is promoting a plan to develop 1800 hectares, known as the Kilmister Block, as the solution to Wellington’s housing crisis.
Greater Wellington chair Daran Ponter and Porirua Mayor Anita Baker have both rejected the plan, citing its potential ecological value. Ponter supports planting it in natives for carbon emission credits.
What do you think? Is it an idea worth pursuing?
